Crystal collection - Handiwork of the frost The magic of the crystals is the immense
diversity of their shapes. It is also interesting to see how the forms
of the pottery affect the density of the crystals and the way they turn
out. A crystal resembles an ice flower and reflects light like a hologram.
Crystalline glazes are not commonly used due to the laborious firing process they require and to the difficulties in controlling the glaze. The firing temperature of the products is as high as 1260 °C. While the kiln is cooling down macro crystals grow within and on the surface of the glaze. The fascination of these products is that they all are unique, as neither the size nor the position of the crystals can be predetermined. Sometimes small and dense crystals arise, sometimes large crystals are scattered on the surface, and sometimes, by lucky chance, also a decorative cracle pattern may be generated in the base coloured glaze. If you want to see some examples of the crystalline glaze we produce, visit our Website at : www.karotti.fi. Always wash crystalline glazed pottery by hand using a mild detergent. Due to the open structure of the crystals we do not recommend these dishes to be used for serving or storing hot, fatty or staining foodstuffs. |
